Finding Relief from Chronic Pain: My Journey and How Functional Neurology Can Help
Living with chronic pain from conditions like fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), autoimmune diseases, or Lyme disease can be incredibly tough.
I know this firsthand because I’ve been through it myself. After struggling with undiagnosed Lyme disease and multiple co-infections, mold toxicity and the chronic pain that comes with chronic illnesses, I discovered some powerful functional neurology techniques that helped me reclaim my life. If you’re dealing with similar issues, these methods might just be what you need.
My Personal Experience with Chronic Pain
When i was in my late 20s, I developed debilitating chronic pain which was made significantly worse after a car wreck. Traditional treatments only gave me temporary relief, and I often was treated like a hypochondriac. “Its all in your head,” people told me. I felt hopeless until I discovered these functional neurology techniques—methods that changed my life. Because the thing was, the pain really was all in my head. The brain controls all pain signaling, and my brain was trying to tell me something was wrong. But the thing is, there is actually something you can do about it when the pain is too much. Now, I want to share these insights with you, hoping they might bring you the relief I found.
Functional Neurology & Manual Muscle Testing Techniques That Made a Difference
One of the first things that made a giant difference was a manual muscle testing method called proprioceptive-deep tendon reflex (P-DTR). P-DTR is first a manual neurological therapy, which is based on neurology, neurophysiology, biomechanics and upon the basic principles of Applied Kinesiology. This technique evaluates how well your nervous system is functioning by muscle testing your responses to various types of stimulus to the skin, and then uses stimulus paired with tapping reflex points to reset the nervous system’s response.
For me, it changed my posture drastically in one session. I signed up to take the courses as soon as I returned home from that appointment. This technique, though difficult to explain, can be a complete game changer in chronic pain.
Applied kinesiology (AK) is a method that is also known as manual muscle testing, AK uses muscle strength to assess several aspects of health. Applied kinesiology views health as a triad – with structural, chemical, and emotional aspects. Each factor represents one side of an equilateral triangle in your “triad of health.” These factors, or “sides,” all influence one another. When one side becomes imbalanced, the others will react and try to compensate. This can lead to further imbalances, steering you farther away from health – and closer to disease.
The principles of AK, woven into the education I pursued, have kept me going. I can’t count how many doctors I have seen who look at my health history and then tell me they don’t know how I function as well as I do. These methods have been the answer for me.
The book Energy Medicine by Donna Eden, who is a Touch For Health instructor, also played a significant role in my recovery, especially her advice on acupressure points and also how to use magnets as a therapeutic tool. Using magnetic fields to enhance blood flow and reduce inflammation, magnet therapy supported my body’s natural healing processes and if you visit my office you might notice I usually have a few magnets stuck to me somewhere. It’s a technique that can be incredibly soothing and effective for chronic pain management.
What I found after working with these techniques is that when my nervous system was organized, I would feel a lot better and then I started responding to normal therapies that wouldn’t hold prior, such as chiropractic, massage therapy, and physical therapy. And I see the same for many of my clients who have struggled with the same symptoms for years without change.
