Scar Tissue: Myofascial and Neurological Problems

Transform Your Recovery with Expert Scar Tissue Rehab and Myofascial Release

Scar tissue rehab is a crucial but often overlooked aspect of post-surgery and injury recovery and pain management. As a massage therapist specializing in scar tissue myofascial release, specifically trained in ScarWork™ which was developed by Sharon Wheeler (one of Ida Rolf’s original students of Rolfing Structural Integration) I’ve witnessed firsthand the significant improvements in pain relief and mobility that effective scar tissue treatment can bring. It’s always rewarding to help clients experience such transformative results.

Understanding Scar Tissue and Its Impact

Scar tissue can cause a range of issues, but it’s surprisingly manageable with the right techniques. Many people aren’t aware of the benefits of addressing scar tissue early, as education on this topic is often limited to niche massage therapy classes and some acupuncture practices. Commonly, doctors might suggest surgical removal of scar tissue, but this can create additional trauma and potentially more scar tissue. Lets talk about more productive ways of working with the scar tissue as opposed to waging war on it.

Scar work can help to reduce pain, tension, weak surrounding muscles,

The Mechanics of Scar Tissue and Myofascial Release

Scar tissue forms quickly and irregularly to bond the wound, creating a strong, but disorganized structure. Unlike the smooth, parallel fibers of healthy muscle tissue, scar tissue is laid down in various directions, which can restrict movement long-term. Myofascial release techniques work to realign these fibers, improving flexibility and reducing tension.

Think of scar tissue as a disorganized pile of pencils on your desk. If you slide your hand back and forth over them, they begin to align in a neat row. Similarly, myofascial scar release helps realign disorganized scar tissue, freeing up movement and alleviating tension.

The Role of Fascia and Scar Tissue

Fascia is a continuous network of connective tissue throughout the body. Scars act like knots in this fabric of tissue, creating tension that can affect other areas. Imagine twisting a corner of a bed sheet; it creates wrinkles and pulls on the rest of the sheet. If you twist another corner, more folds appear, and the twists began to pull on each other as well. Just like in the fabric, multiple scars will increase tension and interact with each other, leading to broader discomfort and pain. Releasing scar tissue helps reduce this tension, often resolving or easing other related pain complaints.

The Neurological Impact of Scar Tissue

Scar tissue also affects the nervous system. Injuries and surgeries are traumatic, and even if the physical healing progresses well, the nervous system may continue to react as though the injury is still occurring due to errant sensory information held within the scar tissue, creating a feedback loop of signaling a a injury that is no longer there to the brain. This ongoing stress can lead to compensatory movements and muscle imbalances, causing long-term pain.

Using Proprioceptive Deep Tendon Reflex (PDTR) therapy, one of my favorite modalities, I help reset the nervous system’s response to scar tissue. PDTR addresses the neurological component, helping the brain feel safe to return to normal movement and motor control.

Benefits of Scar Tissue Rehab

Effective scar tissue rehab can restore normal movement and mobility, reduce pain, alleviate pulling sensations, numbness and other sensory issues, and improve lymphatic and blood circulation. It may also enhance the cosmetic appearance of scars, making a significant difference not just in your overall comfort and well-being, but how you feel about your body.
